I’m Kevin Gallo, and I’m an adjunct professor in computer science here at Northwest University.

My journey, well it started about 30 years ago when I had some friends and pastors that I knew that attended here, but it kind of kicked into high gear when my daughter Anna started attending here. And I got to see directly how students were impacted and what the heart of Northwest University was.

And it all really started with that first on-campus meeting where Dr. Castleberry really explained the philosophy that Northwest University cared and focused on Christ being the center, regardless of what vocation you went into.

And my daughter kind of told me this story that I think really brought that together, which is that one of her professors in her missions course started every single class with, you know, 30 minutes of prayer for the first month, and then explained why it was so important to have yourself spiritually prepared rather than just preparing and planning every detail of what maybe a mission trip or your vocation is.

But knowing that something would always come up, something that would interrupt you, that you wouldn’t be prepared for, and knowing that you had spiritually been ready for that, and that God had guided you and had done that.

And this is a lifelong journey lesson that she has learned, and really the first story she always tells about Northwest University.

But my daughter attending was really not, really my only connection. It really started to get deeper about me personally becoming a part of Northwest University a few months ago.

I was deciding that something God wanted me to go do different in life, and so I left Microsoft that I had been at for 30 years. And unbeknownst to me, a need had come up in the computer science department they couldn’t find someone to fill a role for one of the courses.

And they had prayed about it, and literally the next day I had resigned and posted on LinkedIn, and God miraculously connected us together.

They sent mail saying, “Hey, do you want to do this?” And I’m like, yeah, this is something I’ve always wanted to go do.

And kind of God winking was the fact that it ended up being the one course—like when they said you’d be teaching, I’m like, I hope it’s Programming II, I hope it’s C++, and it actually was exactly what I had hoped for.

I felt like God just kind of gave me that nod and said, “Yes, this is where I want you to spend your time.”

And one of the things that really motivates me to be directly involved with students and teaching at Northwest University is to bring that heart of ministry that my daughter had learned in their ministry courses into technology.

It is so important in technology these days because the philosophy of those who write the code and build the software and build the products is coming through in how those products get used.

And we see this every day in every field because technology and computer science and software is involved in everything that people go do, especially in things that are emerging like AI, where they learn and machine learning and all of that goes into every single technology field that’s out there.

We want to make sure that our students are trained to truly know how to bring that preparedness—that spiritual preparedness, that prayer—into their vocational field and be excellent at both.
